My Lord, What a Morning: An Autobiography
Published in Hardcover by Viking Press (October, 1956)
Author: Marian Anderson
Average review score:

The most excellent autobiography I've read in ages...
This was a completely personal and revealing work. If you are a fan of Anderson's voice this book will soon become one of your favourites. I couldn't put it down (I know that statement is cliche-ed but it's the truth). Anderson had an incredible struggle establishing a career as an African American opera singer, but throughout her life she treated everyone she encoountered (despite the cruelty and racism of many) with dignity and grace. Her autobiography is indicative of her supreme modesty and love of music and the human voice as the most divine instrument. If you buy it, you will be enchanted. I particularily recommend it for people studying voice.

Mystery of the Incarnation
Published in Paperback by Intervarsity Press (June, 1979)
Author: James Norman Dalrymple, Sir Anderson
Average review score:

Mystery of the Incarnation by an enlightened Lay Theologian
The Mystery and the books:
Many books have been written by believers and skeptics, since the two schools of Christian thought monist Alexandria and dualist Antioch started to examine this mystery described by St.Paul to Timothy as:"Without any doubt, the mystery of our religion is great: He was revealed in the flesh, vindicated in the spirit..."1Tim 3:16,(NRSV),while the NJB describes the mystery as: very deep indeed. Under the same exact title, Cardinal Basil hume wrote his book for the believers.

James Norman Dalrymple, Sir Anderson:
The author of many books that prove his masterful approach and the depth of his subject selection, include Christianity and Comparative religion , and Issues of life and Death.
Sir Norman anderson, before retiring was professor of Oriental laws, and director of the institute of Advanced Legal Studies at the university of London. Although he describes himself, in the book foreward, as amateur in the field, but his invitation to give the series of lecture reveals how expert few amateurs can naturally evolve to be an antidote to excessive specialization.

Book Milieu, and Subject Elaboration:
The concise forward tells you the background of the theological debate in G.B. about Christianity since 1976, for serious minded people inside and outside the Church. A debate john of Woolwich started a decade before. He recounts his memoirs related to the subject of the lectures including his letter to John Hick, and books by C. Moule, E. Mascall, and G. Lampe (Bampton lectures)

1. The backgroud to the contemporary debate
2. Christology down the centuries
3. The incarnation and comparative religion
4. Some examples of contemporary debate I& II :5.
6. The Incarnation and personal faith today
7. Glossary (concise but extremely helpful for non theologians)

Biblical Christology:
Taking the then hot debate, as a refernce point he elaborated very masterfully on the original bible message and how close were its interpretation by different debaters. This was his benchmark that he compares contemporary theologians views including john knox, J.A.T.Robinson, and Lampe among others.
The author builds up in a logical way his developed scheme interpretting and solving the problems theologians stuggled with.

Glimpses of Enlightment:
-On Cyril of Alexandria:
Yet Harnack could write of Luther that'Since Cyril, no teacher has arisen in the Church to whom the mystery of the unity of the two natures in Christ was so deep a consolation'
-On Alexandrian Vs Antiochene Christology:
In terms of the classical Christology, what we must take from Alexandrines is that Jesus Christ himself, and not merely the Logos who assumed manhood in him, was truly God; and what we must take from the Antiochenes is that he himself, as an integrated personality, truly became man.
-On Salvation of Non Christians:
that 'the whole religious life of mankind, beyond the stream of Judaic-christian faithis thus by implication excluded as lying outside the sphere of salvation, that 'the doorway bto eternal life is Christian faith'and that god 'has decreedthat only those born within one particular thread of human life should be saved'

Native Mesoamerican Spirituality
Published in Paperback by Paulist Press (May, 1980)
Authors: Miguel Leon-Portilla, Munro S. Edmonson, and Arthur J. Anderson
Average review score:

Real Aztec Gold
This book is simply essential for libraries belonging to poets, historians, pre-columbian and otherwise, -- art and otherwise, -- plain literary types . . . (why purchase some dud modern "poet" with only a few jewels in the mud when you can have an entire culture's fragments in one thin volume? -- the real poetry of this book is what isn't read, what is felt beyond, the lost worlds of the Maya, the Toltecs, the Aztecs, and so on . . . all the poems, songs, stories that didn't survive). Some of the most beautiful poems, or as they are called in a few of the selections, "flower-songs", I have ever read anywhere, and from any time, are to be found here. Yes, "I was absolutely riveted . . . ." That these selections are rendered into familiar and comfortable (to modern Western poetic sensibilities) and yet faithful to the original form is more than just a service of the anthropological-historical kind, it is a high literary success by Mr. Leon-Portilla and all those others involved in this project. There is no world like the New World, which is still New to us that have taken up the task of finally "discovering" it after all these centuries following its conquest instead of obscuring it, masking its enchanting past, -- found in histories, stories, memories become dreams, and vice versa, which escaped the conqueror's destructive hand -- in our own kind of lies and reflective interpretations like a great cultural of our own filth muddying their magical waters . . . no less atrocious a crime not just to them but to all men than the ugly graffiti of the American flag on the moon . . . if you want to go digging in the rubble for some real treasures, read this book . . . it's light, -- like gold should be, and, you know, you won't drown with it in your pocket if you take it on travels crossing waters . . . I mean that this is the real gold that the Spanish missed when they tried to annihilate not just a cultural tradition but an essence of mind, an essence of man, which we can certainly make a good go of recapturing, or at least see in the nearing distance, by reading their poetry and song . . . find this book, -- find a real "lost civilization" that isn't lost at all except by our own losing of it. Now how can you throw away an entire world?

New England Roadside Delights

Fun, colorful, informative history of early NE motoring
What a great book. Historic pictures and humorous butknowledgable writing bring you through the early days of New Englanddiners, gas stations, post cards, roadmaps, clam shacks, tea rooms, rest cabins, even collectible matchbooks! A real treat that brings you back to a simpler (and better) time. Stories of past establishments, and great personal research as to "what ever happened to" these places. Whenever I want a good escape from the stress of today, I pick up my copy and just love it each time. Try writing the author for a copy at bramhall terrace, portland maine, or look up his other great nostalgia/travel/beer history books. He's got a neat niche.
